Three ways to organize your group into teams

If you’re planning a team building activity, chances are, you’ll need to organize your group into teams. Having your group do this themselves can end up in chaos and confusion – probably not how you’ll want to start your team building activity!

Here are three different ways you can organize your group into teams:

1. Randomly

There are a few ways to pick teams randomly. You can simply put names into a hat and draw teams that way. Or allocate each individual with a number, depending on how many teams you have. For example, if you have 30 participants that you want to organize into teams of six - give each person a number from one to six. Each number represents a team.

Pros: It’s a fair and unbiased way to organize and mix people up

Cons: You may end up with teams made up of similar backgrounds, abilities, or personality types

2. By personality type

Sometimes, teams don’t work well together because they are all one type of personality. You might want to therefore consider mixing people up so your teams have a range of personality types. First define your personality types and then group them together ahead of time. Then, let people know what team they are in, either prior to the activity or on the day.

Pros: You may find groups play to their individual strengths and work together better

Cons: You really need to know everyone in your team well to sort them this way

3. By departments/teams

One of the benefits of team building is getting to know people you don’t work with that often. Usually, people want to be in teams with their friends. But dividing teams up so that you mix people from different departments can be a great way to form new bonds and help push people out of their comfort zone.

Pros: Helps people get to know others and form new bonds

Cons: You may not have equal numbers of people in each department to mix them up in this way
